06/09/09 Castle Youth A 1-5 (W)

First game of the season, away at Castle who finish 3rd in the league last time. This is the first of 4 really difficult away games and we need to start well to build up confidence. We were without Shane who was playing for Wolves and Jake was making is comeback after missing the majority of pre season due to a bag leg injury. Started off quite well and looked good in possession. We started to get in good positions but either the final ball or the finishing was quite not there. We did have a wake up call when Castle did break and following a goal mouth scramble Liam C made a fantastic save to keep the scoreline 0-0. We took the lead when Ryan put in a great corner for Rob to knock home from the back post. Unfortuately, we didn't hold the lead for long when their forward broke through to lob the ball home. At half time, I just the lads to become a little bit more ruthless when we get our chances and asked to up the tempo a little more. We started off well again and were putting Castle under real pressure. Their keeper made a great save from Shaka, but moments later Shaka made sure he scored with a sweet left foot finish. Castle tried to come back into the game, but we were looking good now and Ryan & Liam R were linking well together up front and creating chances. Liam R then made it 3-1 with a good finish into the top corner. we were in total control now, with Jake controlling the middle of the park. Shaka added a further 2 goals to complete his hat trick, the last of which was a sweet strike from long range. Josh nearly added another but was unlucky to see his effort hit the inside of the post and somehow stayed out. A great start to the season, but that is all that it is. I know the season as just started but we have got a big test next week away at Celtic. Looking forward to it already!!!!

Goals: Shaka Edwards (3), Rob Perry, Liam Robinson

13/09/09 Celtic Athletic A 5-3 (L)

Away again today at Celtic. We knew this was going to be a tough game as Celtic are very much the team in form and haven't let in any goals during pre season and the start of the season. The build up to the game again wasn't great with Shane on Wolves duty and Ryan & Jordan struggling with injuries. We were literally down to the bare bones. We needed to be fully switched on from the 1st whistle today. However, we did exactly the opposite. We stood off Celtic and let them play and it was no surprise that they went 1 up after a couple of minutes. We weren't at the races and it wasn't looking good. Slowly we started to get a foot hold in the game and we drew level when Josh hit a great long range effort into the roof of the net. At last the lads started to look like they believe in themselves and we started to play the football we know we can play. We took the lead when Shaka hit a fantastic long range strike into the top corner. We had turned things around and gained control of the game. Unfortunately, on the stroke of half time we lost our concentration and shape and Celtic equalised although Ollie was unlucky with a great effort to clear the ball off the line. 2-2 at half time and all to play for. I asked the lads to really stay solid for the 1st 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Unfortuately again we did the opposite and let in 2 very poor goals in the 1st few minutes. So from being 2-1 up and in control we found us 4-2 within literally 5 minutes of play. This took the wind out of our sails. Celtic scored again with their forward hitting a fine strike from the edge of the area. In fairness to our lads we still kept going forward. Then from a corner we headed against the underside of the bar and it looked like the ball had gone way over the line (in fact some of the Celtic players said it was after the match) but the linesman kept his flag down!!! Thankfully, when the ball was cleared the ball fell to Ben who from 25 yards out hit a great shot into the corner. So justice was done there. For the last 5 minutes we continued to push forward but couldn't add to the scoreline. Todays game was very frustrating because for all but 5 minutes of the game we were very much in it. However, the 5 minutes was the difference and we need to cut out the lapses of concentration if we are to stay up the top end of the table and add a little more steel to our game. If we do, then we would be a very tough team to play against because I feel that we are one of the most attractive teams to watch in the area and after today I am more than ever determined to get it right. So expect some hard training next week lads. There are many positives to come out of today though. We scored 3 goals against a side who have had about 10 clean sheets on the bounce and played some great football. Hopefully, Ryan & Jordan will be fit for next week to add more competition for places. Also Shane is returning back to us after Wolves have finally decided not to keep him. Their loss is certainly our gain. Great to have you back Shane. Next week another massive game away to the champions, Withymoor East. Come on boys, Believe in yourselves!!!!

Goals: Josh Wright, Shaka Edwards, Ben Checketts

20/09/09 Withymoor Colts East A 0-6 (W)

Away to the champions today. We have had some very good games in the past and we needed to be at our best to get the result we were looking for. We started off very well and looked very comfortable on the ball. We had them penned in but we just couldn't get the goals our approach play deserved. We didn't panic though and Ben put us in front when he scored from the edge of the area with a well struck shot into the bottom corner. This gave us even more confidence and Shaka continued his goal scoring run with a great finish when he coolly lobbed the keeper. We were really playing some great football now and Josh finished from close range to put us 3-0 up. Then just before half time Shaka scored again to put us in total command. 4-0 and fully deserved. At half time I asked the lads to keep pushing for more goals but to also not get sloppy in defence. We started off were we left off with us having most of the play, but when you have a big lead at half time it is sometimes difficult to keep playing at the same high level. Josh did score again after a good flowing move and he also completed his first hat trick for Gornal heading home yet another fantastic cross from Ben. A very classy performance today and very pleased we kept a clean sheet. Need to keep the same level of performance again next week as we have another tough away game against Halas Hawks East. Well done today boys. One word QUALITY!!!!!!

Scorers: Ben Checketts, Shaka Edwards (2), Josh Wright (3)

27/09/09 Halas Hawks East A 1-9 (W)

Today we travelled to Halas in what was the 4th of 4 very tough away games to start the season. Halas were very much in the run for the title last year and only drifted away need the end. So I knew we had to be on the top of the game. Before we started I stressed to the lads that the performance we put on last week must become the norm and we needed to become more consistant. In the first 10 minutes we started off just as I asked and Halas were struggling to keep us at bay. Josh carried on where he left off last week and put us 1 up with a left foot finish. That soon became 2 when Ryan neatly finished a flowing move. We then took the foot off the pedal and even though we were in control, we were going through the motions a little. Then just before half time Ben went on a run down the left and when he put the ball over it drifted over the keepers head into the far corner. However, straight from the kick off we went to sleep and their winger broke through and was fouled in the box. Halas then scored from the spot to make the score 3-1 at half time and they were back in it. I had a go at the boys at half time as I felt we had become a little complacent and let Halas back in the game. In fairness to the boys they answered me with a fantastic 2nd half performance of fast attacking football. Dan scored with a right footed (Yes RIGHT!!!) effort in the 1st minute of the 2nd half to put us well in control. Dan then added a further goal when he deflected another shot in the corner. Then from a free fick Ben headed the ball across the box for Jake to tap home. We were looking really dangerous now and were creating loads of chances. Ryan then added another to make it 7-1. Ryan completed his hat trick when we produced a flowing move and Liam R put through a great ball for Ryan who beat the keeper to the ball and nicked it past him and into the net. We finished the scoring from the penalty spot where Liam R stroked the ball into the corner. A fantastic performance today and an absolute pleasure to watch. Running a kids team can be hard work at times, but when the lads play like that it is worth it (Just need our goalposts!!!!!! Should get answer from Football Foundation early next week!!!!! Hopefully!!!). Well done today a fantastic performance. QUALITY last week, AWESOME today, especially the 2nd half. Next week we start our South Staffs Cup campaign. We know how much we enjoyed it last season and I doubt we will every forget the 4th May, but it will be even more difficult this year as the holders. I am sure Silverdale Warriors won't come and lie down for us, so yet again we will need to approach the game in the right way and try to play to our maximum. Well done boys.

Scorers: Ryan Oakley (3), Dan Ferguson (2), Ben Checketts, Josh Wright, Liam Robinson

04/10/09 Silverdale Warriors H 14-0 (W) South Staffs Rnd 1
At home at last today, in the 1st round of the South Staffs Cup. Thanks to Wombourne Olympic for letting us kick off early on their pitch. We all know how much this competition means to us and the lads were determined to carry on from last weeks performance. Although we dominated from the start we weren't at the same level as last week. We had a couple of goals cancelled due to some very tight offside decisions. However once we went 1 up from a Jake header the goals started to flow. 7-0 up at half time, I asked the lads to continue pushing for more and not let the game just drift. The 2nd half was just like the 1st in that we were slow out of the blocks but yet again we when one goal came then we started to flow. So another 7 were added to the final scoeline of 14-0. I must say that it could have been more but some great saves from the Silverdale keeper. So we are safely through to the next round and thats all I can ask for. Well done boys. Just like to finish to say welcome back to Liam Cartwright and his family after a very short break. Its good to have you back.

Scorers: Ryan Oakley (5), Josh Wright (3), Shaka Edwards (2), Ben Checketts, Kieron Price, Jake Cartwright, Liam Robinson

11/10/09 Halas Hawks North A 1-3 (W)
On the road again today against Halas Hawks North. They are new to the division, but they have had a good start and have made a good impression. We were a couple down with Shaka away camping and Jack ill. Ryan had also got off his sick bed, so we knew things would be tough. We started off ok and had most of the possession, however we had to be alert to their forward who is the quickest player I have seen at this age. We weren't playing at the high level of the previous weeks and we wasn't moving the ball quick enough giving Halas time to get their tackles in. However, we took the lead when Ben put in a free kick which Shane headed home. Halas though wasn't going to lie down and their forward burst through and rounded Liam C but Shane somehow got back to make a goal saving block. The game was going end to end and Shane was unlucky not to double the lead with another header which beat the keeper but was cleared off the line. 1-0 at half time. I asked the lads to up the tempo in the 2nd half and try to get the ball wider quickier. Again we were in control of the game without playing at our full maximum. Ben then scored with a great strike from the edge of the box to easy our nerves a little.Josh was also unlucky to see a great header beat the keeper but again was cleared off the line by the defender. The game seemed to be drifting a little now until with about 5 minutes left their forward broke through with his pace and slid the ball home. 2-1 now and Halas could sense that they had a chance to get something out of the game. We needed a response now and in fairness to the boys we responded well and after a good passing movement Jake struck from 25 yards into the top corner. A good result today, even though we weren't at our best, which is a good sign really. We battled hard and defended well when needed, so well done boys. I must say I think that Halas North will do well in this league this season and will cause alot of teams a few problems. Next week we are away are Trysull Tigers West. Yet another tough game against a team that got promoted last season. They haven't lost a game yet and we will need to be up for it again boys if we want this winning run to continue.

Goalscorers: Shane Grainger, Ben Checketts, Jake Cartwright

18/10/09 Trysull Tigers West A 1-8 (W)

Today, we were away at Trysull, who were unbeaten so far this season. I told the lads we needed to be out of the blocks quickly and not let them settle. The lads seemed to listen and we were camped in their half. We took the lead when after a good passing movement Liam R laid the ball off to Ben who struck his shot first time into the top corner. We were all over them now and Liam R was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post. We were creating chances but we weren't ruthless enough. Then the first time they got in our half, we feel asleep at a throw in and their striker broke free and got fouled in the box. The penalty was tucked home well giving Liam in goal no chance. So 1-1 when we should have been comfortably in the lead. We continued to make aload of chances but we didn't seemed to have our shooting boots on. Then with about 5 minutes before half time Liam R went on a run past 2 or 3 Trysull defenders and saw his shot just saved by the keeper but the ball fell to Ryan who scored from close range. Then a minute later Ryan scored from close range again to put us 3-1 up at half time. At half time I asked the lads to become more ruthless and make sure we take our chances. The lads did this and played some great football. Dan was fouled in the box after a lovely flowing move and Ben calmly struck the penalty home. Then Shaka burst through and made the score 5-1. We were playing some great football now and Trysull were struggling to keep us out. Rob came up from the back to head home a Ben free kick. Then Liam R scored after ghosting past a few defenders to score a well deserved goal and lastly Jordan finished the scoring after a good break down the left. So the final scoreline was 8-1, which is obviously a fantastic scoreline. As always though I want more and I think we have more to come. The boys need to play at their maximum each week in this league and we can't afford any more slip ups. Another tough game next week against Warley. Need to be ruthless again next week boys to get the result we want. Well done lads.

Goalscorers: Ben Checketts (2), Ryan Oakley (2), Shaka Edwards, Rob Perry, Liam Robinson, Jordan Brookes

25/10/09 Warley Borough H 9-1 (W)

Today was our first home league game of the season. Yes the goals have finally arrived!!!! Warley were just behind us in 3rd place and I was looking for another high quality performance to keep our run going. From their kick off Josh stole the ball off their midfielder and had a long range effort which their keeper saved in the first 10 seconds. We didn't build on this quick start though and we looked a little off the pace. They had the next shot on target from the edge of the area, which Liam C held well. We took the lead, when Liam R hit a great shot from outside the area into the top of the net. We weren't firing as we have been, but when we did get the ball moving quickly we were giving Warley problems. We scored our second goal after a good passing movement led to Dan squaring the ball to Shaka, who made no mistake. Then Shane burst through Warleys defence to make it 3 -0 at half time. I asked the lads to up the tempo now as I felt we were just going through the motions. In fairness to the lads they came out like a train and scored 3 goals within the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. Firstly Ben went on a great run and the cross was turned into the goal by a Warleys defender. Then again Ben produced a great run and cross for Josh to head home.  Shaka capitised on the hesitation in the Warley defence to score his 2nd and our 6th. We then cruised for a while, but Warley kept going and created a couple of chances and pulled back one goal with a neat finish. This seemed to wake us up a little. Shaka then went on to complete his hat trick and Josh scored his second from close range. To finish the scoring Jordan put over a cross for Liam R to header home from off the post (Yes, thats right a Liam R HEADER!!!!!). So the final score was 9-1 without us hitting the top of our game. Not bad really boys. Next week its back to the South Staffs Cup away at Kiddy Lions. Looking forward to it already.

01/11/09 Kidderminster Lions Juniors A 0-8 (W) South Staffs Rnd 2
Back to South Staffs cup action today at Kidderminster. We didn't start off that well and our passing game took a long time to get going even though we were camped in their half. We took the lead when Liam R got onto the end of a long ball and found Ryan in space on the edge of the box, who then coolly knocked the ball home. We continued to control the game without hitting top gear. Josh put us 2 up with a neat finish and he added his 2nd and our 3rd after he headed home after seeing his first effort hit the bar. 3-0 at half time but not playing that well. I asked for the lads to up the tempo in the 2nd half. Ben added to 2 quick goals to put us 5 up to effectively kill the game. It took us a while to score again due to their keeper making some good saves and us missing a few chances. Ryan added his second from close range and Rob got on the scoresheet with a neat finish from a corner. Then Josh completed his hat trick to finish the score at 8-0. So we are through to the 3rd round now and the games will be become tougher and tougher. it was nice to keep a clean sheet as well. Welll done boys.

08/11/09 Brandhall A 1-11 (W) League Cup

Away in the cup today against Brandhall from the 3rd division. Again we started fairly slowly but were camped in their half. We missed a few chances and Ben was unlucky to see in effort came back off the post. We did take the lead when Ben went on a great run down the left and put in a great cross for Shaka to head home from close range. Ben soon then created the 2nd, when again he broke free down the left and chipped the ball over the keeper and Josh ran in to knock the ball over the line. Ben was causing them major problems and created the 3rd when again he put in a great cross for Shaka to score again. We went to sleep a little then and from a rare Brandhall attack we got caught out and they pulled one back. Then just on half time Ben deservedly got onto the scoresheet.4-1 up but just like the last few weeks we were playing within ourselves. We started brightly in the 2nd half and Shaka put over a great cross for Ben to cleverly head home. The 6th was again created by Ben who put over a cross for Ryan to tap home. We were creating chances at will and Liam R coolly finished to make it 7-1 after a mistake in the Brandhall defence. Shaka made it 8 after bursting through the defence and Liam R finished off after some great work from Kieran to make it 9. In between this we had hit the woodwork a few times. Ryan then struck home a sweet shot from 25 yards into the net and Jake finished the scoring after Ryan had broke free down the right. A very comfortable game today, but fair play to Brandhall who kept going until the end. We are now in the the last 16 of the league cup and eagerly await the draw. Well done boys!!!! Back to league action next week against Halas Hawks North. We know they pose a threat upfront, so we will have to be on top of our game to keep them quiet. We will need to be on top form to keep our run going.

15/11/09 Halas Hawks North H 7-1 (W)
Back to league duty today against Halas Hawks North, who had given us a tough game at their place. We knew that they had plenty of pace up front and we needed to be switched on from the first whistle. We started well and were camped in their half. Ben was causing all sorts of problems down the left and was putting in some quality crosses in. We took the lead after 5 minutes when Ben put in another great corner and the ball broke for Liam R to finish from close range. Soon we added another when Jake scored from close range from a Ben corner. We were really on top, however, we did let the game drift a little and were guilty of missing a few chances. Liam R was unlucky to see a goal ruled out for offside but at half time it was only 2-0 when the game should have been out of sight. At half time I asked for the lads to up the tempo again. The lads did this and we scored our 3rd very early on in the half. Ryan won the ball from a goal kick and hit a wonderful half volley into the top of the net.We quickly made that 4 when Josh finished neatly. We were playing well now and Shaka made it 5 when his pace took him away from their defence and colly finished passed the keeper. In fairness to Halas they kept on fighting and their forward kept battling away. He as pace to burn but Shane was handling really well. The striker did though did get free once and pulled one back for them. We then went through the gears again and Ben chased a lost cause and hit a great shot we the keeper thought was going wide. Josh completed the scoring after a great move including Jordan, Dan, Liam R & Rob. I felt the lads played much better today than they have done in recent weeks. I think that is due to the fact that we were playing a better team and raised our game. Again next week we will have to do the same when we are home to Halas Hawks East. Another tough game. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

22/11/09 Halas Hawks East H 5-2 (W)
At home to Halas East today. I knew that they would be up for the game today after we had played so well against them in the reverse fixture. I wanted a quick start to keep them on the back foot. In fairness to the lads we got that and Josh soon put us 1 up in the first few minutes. However, from that point, even though we were fairly in control, we took our foot off the gas. Slowly Halas game back into the game and their confidence grew, while our passing game was not at the standard I am looking for. They equalised when their forward controlled the ball well on his chest and smashed a shot into the top corner. This gave them belief and soon their striker added a 2nd from the edge of the area. 2-1 down at half time and we needed a reaction and fast. We started the 2nd half much stronger and looked like we were up for it. The equaliser soon came when Shaka hit a left foot shot into the bottom corner. Shane was running the show in midfield and their keeper somehow kept out an effort from him. It was only a matter of time though now and we re-took the lead when Shane met a corner from Josh. We continued to push forward and Shaka put us 4-2 up when the ball got cleared to him and he quickly return it back into the net. Then in the last minute Shane went on a run and put a great ball through to Ben. Ben then cooly dinked the ball over the keeper and into the far corner. A quality finish to cap off a great 2nd half. The lads showed great sprit in the 2nd half today and showed that when things aren't going right, they are more than prepared to roll up their sleeves and work damn hard for each other. Well done boys.
Scorers: Shaka Edwards (2), Josh Wright, Shane Grainger, Ben Checketts

29/11/09 West Hagley A 0-6 (W)

Away to West Hagley today. It was the first time we had met and we didn't know what to expect, other than they had run Celtic close the week before, so we had to ensure we were switched on from the first whistle. We started off well and took the lead in the first few minutes when Ben broke free and he crossed the ball into their box. The defence only cleared it to around the penalty spot, where Shane volleyed home. West Hagley then got a free kick on the edge of the box out wide. Their player hit a sweet shot but Liam C in goal got a good hand to tip it away. We were playing some good football especially considering the conditions, which were getting worse by the minute. Jack then got the ball in his right back position and went on a great run past 2 of their players and then produced a quality ball into the box for Liam R to header home. We went 3 up when we put the Hagley defence under pressure and Shane out jumped everybody to head home. 3-0 up at half time. I asked the lads to keep up the good work and not take the foot off the pedal. The conditions were getting even worse now and the light was going quickly as we had a 2.30 kick off. 2nd half was more of the same, with us in control and camped in their half. Josh turned the ball home from close range to put us 4 up. Ben scored the 5th after he run through the defence and clipped the ball past the keeper. Then Ryan completed the scoring from close range. A good performance today considering the conditions and happy that we kept a clean sheet. Well done boys. Next week in the South Staffs Cup against Norton Canes. Promises to be a tough game. I am sure that the lads will be up for it as I know how much the competition means to them. Looking forward to it already.

06/12/09 Norton Canes H 3-0 (W) South Staffs Rnd 3

Back to South Staffs Cup action today, with a 3rd round home tie against Norton Canes, who are top of the Lichfield league. We had heard that we would have a physical battle today and thats how it proved. We started off very well and Ryan was put through after 5 minutes and he coolly put us 1 up. We were camped in their half and they were struggling to contain us. The tackles were flying in but the lads stood up to the test and continued to try to play their football. We had a couple of decent chances that went begging and we nearly got punished when Norton had a couple of decent attacks. Then on the stroke of half time the ball broke to Shaka on the edge of the box. The keeper got a hand on the ball but couldn't stop it from going into the net. 2-0 at half time and in control. At half time, I stressed to the lads to keep their focus and not dragged into any personal battles. In fairness the lads still got the ball down when they could and bossed the possession. Norton were playing with 4 up now but they never really got any quality ball to them. We missed a few very good chances, but Shaka secured the game with a fantastic strike from the edge of the box. We were in no mood to let them back into the game now and kept things tight at the back. I thought the lads did really well today, unfortunately we can't play fast attcking football all of the time. Sometimes, you have to battle through against certain teams and today the lads did just that. In fairness we could and should have scored a few more. Well done boys. Last 16 of the Staffs Cup. The games will just get tougher and tougher now.
Goalscorers: Shaka Edwards (2), Ryan Oakley

13/12/09 Castle Youth A 1-11 (W)
Away today in the league cup. Castle is a tough place to go and we have had some real tough games in the past. This was the only all division 1 tie in the cup and we needed to be on top form to get through to the quarter finals. Castle were playing with just 1 upfront and were allowing us to attack them and trying to catch us on the break. We took the lead early on when Shaka broke free past their left back and calmly tucked the ball home. We were in control with Castle struggling to to get players forward to support their lone striker. We were playing some lovely football now. Shane put us 2 up when he broke from midfield and finished well with his left foot. Then Ryan scored from close range to put us 3 up. The lads didn't take their foot off the pedal and Dan struck a great left foot shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box. Dan then scored again from close range after a quality corner from Ben. Just on the stroke of half time Castle pulled one back from a good free kick. 5-1 at half time. I just asked the lads to repeat what they did in the first half. Did they?? They certainly did with Shaka going on a scoring spree. He added 4 more quality goals to the one in the first half to bag 5 in all. Shane also scored from close range and Josh scored a well deserved goal after he and Liam R had played a great one two on the edge of the box. The lads were AWESOME today and was a pleasure to watch them play against tough opposition. We need to keep the run going now because next week we have a MASSIVE game against league leaders and unbeaten Celtic visit Ounsdale. It promises to be a great game and I can't wait. Well done boys today, pure QUALITY.

29/12/09 Hill Top   6-1 (W) (Friendly - WBA Dome)
Today, we were invited by Hill Top of the Bilston League to played a friendly at the Albion dome. It was a great opportunity for the lads to play in good facilities and run off their Christmas pudding!!!!! Started off very brightly and Liam R was put through and he coolly slotted home with his left foot. He had a few other chances but the Gornal old boy in goal for Hill Top, George, made a couple of good saves. We continued to make chances and Josh put us 2 up with a good finish. Then Shane put us 3 up with a header after 20 minutes. We looked strong in defence and dangerous on the break and Shane scored again to put us 4 up. Shane completed his hat trick before Hill Top pulled one back but Shane again had the final word to score our 6th and his 4th. A very good work out today for the lads after the Christams break against good opposition. Thanks to Rich at Hill Top for the invite. Massive game this weekend against Shires in the Staffs Cup, hopefully todays workout will get the lads in good shape for Sunday.

24/01/10 Withymoor West H 4-3(W)

At last we are back after the Christmas break and the poor weather. After a big break like we have had, you are always worried how the lads will react. Wiil they be fresh and ready to go or will they be rusty? Straight away from the kick off we gave the ball away to easy and that set the tone for the first 15 minutes. We were second to every ball and it looked like Withymoor wanted it more than us. We couldn't get going and they nearly took the lead when their right back hit a great shot from 30 yards out that hit the bar and the rebound was put over. We then took the lead against the run of play when Shane burst into their box and was brought down. Ben coolly sloted home for the spot. This perked us up a little and Dan hit the bar with a header and we were starting to create a few more chances. Shaka put us 2 up when he burst down the right and he chipped the ball into the net. Then Josh scored from close range to put us 3-0 up. We almost went 4 up when Shaka controlled the ball on his chest and turned and volleyed in one movement but somehow Jack in their goal kept the ball out with a flying save. I said to the lads we were lucky to be 3 up and we needed to up our game. Unfortuately, I think it went on deaf ears. We didn't look like we were up for it and were going through the motions, even though Shaka put us 4 up with a free kick. Then with about 20 minutes left a long ball was played by them and their striker won the race against Liam in goal for us and scored from a long way out. This gave Withymoor hope and we just didn't react. We let in 2 more poor goals from our point of view when we let their player run 40 yards without putting a tackle in. In fairness in the last 8 minutes we coped much better and they didn't get a chance to equalise. A poor performance today lads and hopefully a lesson to be learnt. We cannot just go through the motions and expect to win. Just a quick mention for Jack, who will be out injured for at least 6 weeks with a knee problem. Hope you get fit quick mate. Also Liam Cartwright, is struggling with his knees at the moment and couldn't run due to the pain. Hope you ok as well mate. We could be struggling for numbers at this rate. Looking for a positive response next week lads.

07/02/10 Shires H 3-1 (W) South Staffs Rnd 4

Today, we welcomed Shires to Ounsdale in the Staffs Cup. The prize for the winners was a place in the quarter finals. Shires are the leaders of the Lichfield league and a tough game was expected. I stressed to the lads we needed a strong start and not like we were last time out against Withymoor West. The lads responded as I asked and we had the majority of possession and were putting Shires defence under pressure. We deservedly went in front after Shane made a break from the back and put the ball in the box for Ryan to coolly clip the ball over the keeper. We continued to push Shires back and we were unlucky not to add another goal after their keeper made a good save. We did go 2 up when Shane headed home a corner from Ben. At half time we were in control and I just asked for more of the same but just made the point that the game wasn’t over. The lads continued in the same vain and created numerous chances. We were unlucky not to add the score with Ryan, Liam R & Ben hitting the woodwork. Then with just 10 minutes left Shires scrambled home the ball from a corner. In fairness to the lads, we responded great and continued to play some great flowing football. From one great move Shaka scored from 10 yards out to secure our victory. Well done today lads. We only had 12 fit players today and you all worked your socks off. Hopefully, Jake will feel better next week and a gornal old boy Tom Hatton as resigned to strengthen the squad. Another big game next week against West Hagley in the League Cup quarter final. Come on GORNAL!!!!!

21/02/10 West Hagley H 6-2 (W) League Cup Qtr Final
Today,we welcomed West Hagley to Ounsdale for the league cup quarter final. I must thank our parents who turned up early to clear the snow off the pitch to make sure the game could go ahead. Thanks everybody. In the warm up our injury problems got worse, when Ryan suffered a groin strain, however, Tom was making his debut on his 2nd stint at the club and Jake was returning from illness. We started off in control but was still a little rusty and wasted a few chances to go ahead. We then had a little wake up call when their striker showed good pace but shot wide when in a good position. We took the lead when we made a good break down the left. Ben and Liam R made a good 1-2 and Ben supplied a great cross for Shaka to finish smartly with his left foot. We looked in control now but couldn't add to the score. Then their striker broke forward again but got the ball stuck between his legs and stumbled over. To everybody's amazement, including the West Hagley mamagement the ref pointed to the spot!!! The pen was taken well and it was all square. We retook the lead when we won a corner. It was partly cleared but Shaka was 20 yards out and struck a great shot to put us 2-1 up. We continued to look dangerous and Liam R was unlucky to see his shot hit the bar,but we still couldn't add the scoreline before half time and their striker was still cusing us problems with his pace. 2nd half, we came out of the blocks quickly and their keeper was making some great saves especially one from an overhead kick from Shane. Josh put us 3-1 up with a neat finish. Josh was causing their defence lots of problems now and he scored again to put us 4-1 up. In fairness to West Hagley they didn't give in and their striker pulled a goal back after another quick break. However, we regained control when Shaka completed his hat trick with a good finish from the edge of the area. Then Ben finished the scoring after a well work short corner finished with a great shot into the net. We are now through to the semi final and whoever we get, it will be tough to get to the final. I just hope now that the weather starts to pick up, so the lads can get back into a consistant run of games. I am sure then our form will get to the same level as before Christmas. Well done boys.

28/02/10 Warley Borough A 0-4 (W)
Today we travelled to Warley in the league. We had Shane unavailable as he was playing for the Albion and Jack & Liam Cartwright out with injuries. Thankfully, Ryan and Josh were fit enough to play or we would have been down to the bare bones. I warned the lads that Warley would be up for the game today as they would want to try to extract some revenge after we beat them 9-1 at home earlier in the season. We needed to make sure to start quickly and ensured we competed all over the field. We did exactly the opposite. We were second to every ball and didn't seemed up for the game. Warley certainly wanted it more and easily contained us. Neither team looked like scoring though. We only had one shot first half when their keeper made a great save off Shaka. 0-0 at half time. Needless to say a few harsh words were spoken and the lads were aware of how disappointed I was with the first half showing. Again, though we were slow out of the blocks. Then after 10 minutes we made a couple of changes just to try to liven things up a little. It seemed to have the desired effect and we took the lead, when Liam R floated over a corner for Jake to head home. In fairness to Warley they came back strong at us and we were lucky to survive a couple of goal mouth scrambles. We were now at least competing more now and looked a little bit more dangerous. Then Shaka broke free down the wing and outpaced the Warley defence and coolly slotted the ball home. This knocked the wind out of Warleys sails and Josh soon put us 3 up. Warley kept on trying and we had to be brave in defence. Then Ollie and Myles (Warley Player) challenged for an header and clashed heads. Ollie suffering a bloody nose and Myles getting an egg shape lump just above his eye. Ollie was ok to carry on but Myles had to come off but fortunately seemed ok afterwards. Warley kept on coming but Liam in goal was in good form and made a few good sves to keep a clean sheet. Josh completed the scoring from close range to give us a flattering 4-0 win. We weren't any near our best today. I know that the pitch was on the small side and a few lads were missing or carrying injuries but we cannot afford to just stroll through games. Teams aren't just going to lay down and let us play we have to earn that right. I am looking for a massive improvement in next weeks South Staffs Quarter final against Lichfield City. We need to, if we want to give us a chance of getting through. One positive today was that we kept a clean sheet, which I have been asking for a number of weeks. So in probably, our worst performance of the season we keep a clean sheet, crazy game football!!!! Come on boys we are better than we showed today, give me the response I am looking for next week.

07/03/10 Lichfield City H 7-0 (W) South Staffs Qtr Final
Today, we were in South Staffs cup action. It is getting to the exiciting stage of the competition and I was hoping the boys were up for the game. When the game started we were camped in their half, however, we coudn't break them down with them only playing one up front. We wasn't passing the ball quick enough and making it easy for them to defend. We took the lead after 20 minutes when Ben set Josh free who slotted the ball home well. To be fair to Lichfield they kept on defending well and it wasn't until the last minute of the half did we increase the lead. Josh broke down the right and put in a great cross for Shaka to head home. 2-0 at half time but we hadn't really got out of second gear. I was looking for more and we did start much better. With Josh putting us 3 up when he bravely converted a Liam R cross. Shaka then made it 4 when he caught the keeper out of position. We then took our foot off the pedal again for a while but was in control. Josh completed his hat trick from close range to put us 5-0 up. Then Shaka completed his hat trick with a great strike from out side the box and added our 7th and his 4th just before the end. We now have two semi finals to look forward to. That is for later in the season though and now we need to concentrate on the league for a few weeks and hopefully keep our run going. Well done boys, in control today without having to put our foot on the gas.

14/03/10 Netherton Colts East H 10-0 (W)
Today, we entertained Netherton Colts East, which was the first time we had ever met. We started off in control but had to wait 10 minutes before we went in front, when Shaka reacted first to a goal kick and he rounded the keeper to put us 1 up. Ryan then put us 2 up when their defender missed a clearance and Ryan ran through to finish from the edge of the area. We were in control although Liam in goal had to make a good save when a shot took a wicked bounce in front of him. Ryan then put us 3 up with a good strike. Then just before half time Shane put us 4 up after the first couple of his efforts were blocked. The wind was making the game difficult but we seemed to lack any urgency. 2nd half was the same really, with us in total control without playing at our maximum. Shaka added a couple more to complete his hat trick. His 3rd goal was a great strike. Ryan completed his hat trick to put us 7-0 up. Liam R got on the score sheet when a cross come shot caught their keeper out. Shaka added another to make it 9-0 and Ryan ran through to score his 4th and our 10th. 10-0 at the end of the game without really pushing ourselves. We have got some tough games coming up and we need to step up the tempo of our game now. Well done boys.

21/03/10 Oldswinford Colts A 2-9 (W)
Away at Oldswinford today and we couldn't have had a worse start. 1 down after a couple of minutes when they broke down our right, got a cross in and after a scramble they knocked the ball home. It would be interesting to see how we would react. Thankfully, it was a positive response and is wasn't long before we levelled. Ben who caused Oldswinford problems down their right all game, put in a great cross and Shaka coming in from the right volleyed the ball home into the top corner. Josh then put us in front from close range after another great run and cross from Ben. The goals were going in thick and fast.Within a minute Ryan scored when a clearance from their keeper fell to him in the middle of the half and coolly return the ball into the empty net. Shaka put us 4 up with another clinical finsh from the corner of the area. In fairness to Oldswinford they kept on coming at us and had a few chances themselves and scored their second after we failed to deal with a ball over the top. We quickly responded though with Shaka completing another hat trick and Ben completing the scoring for first half with another very good finish from the edge of the box. 6-2 at half time and time to catch our breathe. At half time, I stressed to the lads that we couldn't afford to give them too much time on the ball and needed to react quickier. We went 7-2 up when Shaka finished another cross from Ben. The game went a little quiet for a while now, although Kieran did make a great clearance off the line. Shaka then scored our 8th and his 5th of the game. Shane, who only came on on at half time due to injury, completed the scoring when he went on a great run and was brought down for a penalty. He dusted himself down and stroked the ball right into the corner. We are certainly scoring alot of goals at the moment and long may that continue but we need to make sure that we keep things tight at the back. Next week we in League Cup Semi Final action against Withy East, it promises to be a cracker. Are you going to be up for it boys??? We will need to be!!!! Looking forward to it!!! COME ON GORNAL!!!!!

28/03/10 Withymoor Colts East H 4-0 (W) League Cup Semi Final
Today we welcomed Withy East to Ounsdale in the Semi Final of the league cup. We knew that it was going to be a tough game against the holders. We had a number of players out due to injury or illness and a few carrying knocks as well. I stressed to the lads that we needed to dig deep today and give everything they had got. They certainly did that today and we produced our best performance since Christmas. We started off well and went ahead after a couple of minutes, when a corner from Ben was diverted home by a Withy defender. Quality ball Ben. This gave the lads alot of confidence and we pinned them in their own half. We were first to every ball and we were putting their defence under more pressure. Shaka then put us 2 up with a great strike with his left foot from distance into the top corner. 2 up but still along way to go. In the last few minutes of the first half Withy did come back into the game, but Liam in goal made a couple of good saves to keep the half time score at 2-0. At half time I stressed to the lads to keep the tempo up and not let them back into the game. The 2nd half was much of the same as the first with us having most of the ball. We went 3 up,when Liam R picked up the ball up in the middle of their half and found Shaka wide on the right. He then produced a great cross for Josh. He saw his first effort saved by the keeper but reacted quickly to knock home the rebound. Shaka then completed the scoring when he hit the shot with power and although the keeper got a hand to it, he couldn't keep the ball out of the net. The lads had put in alot of effort today and got tired near the end but kept a clean sheet thanks to some great blocks in a goal mouth scramble. The boys were great today and have got themselves a cup final to look forward to on the 9th May at the Dell. However, there is alot of football to be played before then and we have a big week ahead of us. We have got Kewford in the league on Wednesday night (the first of many midweek games) and then next Sunday another cup semi final in the South Staffs cup against Chase Stags. Keep the focus boys!!! Well done today.

31/03/10 Kewford Eagles A 0-4 (W)

Away tonight, in our first of many mid week games. We only had 11 players available due to injuries and Tom not being available. I stressed to the lads that we need to build on the good performance that we put in on Sunday. However, we started slowly and didn't pass the ball quick enough and the Kewford back five defended well. There was space out on the wings but as Kewford were playing 3 in the middle but again we didin't get quality ball out to the wings. We didn't seem in trouble in defence but wasn't creating any chances either. Their was a couple of goal mouth scrambles but Dans effort was blocked and their keeper saved well from Shaka. It looked like the half was going to remain goal less. Until we won a corner in the last minute before half time. Liam R then put in a quality ball that went straight in the far corner. 1-0 at half time but we hadn't played at anywhere near our best. I asked the lads to up the tempo and get the ball passed quickier. We came out alot brighter and pushed Kewford back. Then the first time we got our passing game right, Jordan finished off a flowing move from close range. We were playing better now, even though we weren't at our best. Shaka put us 3 up when he latched on to a passback and knocked the ball past their keeper. Their keeper made a couple of good saves as we created more chances but he couldn't stop a shot from Shaka near the end of the game to complete the 4-0 scoreline. A good result in the end, even if the preformance wasn't as good as we hoped. Just hope that the injured lads recover in time for Sunday. Another MASSIVE game, Chase Stags away in the South Staffs Cup Semi Final. Looking forward to it. COME ON GORNAL. Well done boys.

04/04/10 Chase Stags A 1-3 (W) South Staffs Semi Final
Today, we were away to Chase Stags of the Lichfield league in the semi final of the South Staffs Cup. It was the 2nd semi in a week for the lads and was looking for another big performance. Injuries were still affecting us with Shane out and Liam Cartwright pulling up in the warm up. Thankfully Jack, was making his first appearance since before Christmas. We were kicking down hill with the wind behind our backs. We started off fairly in control without creating many chances. Then after 15 minutes Shaka put over a great cross field pass from the right to Ben on the left. Ben ran clear of the defence and rounded the keeper. The ball was running away from him down the slope but he calmly stroked the ball home from a very tight angle. This gave the lads a great lift. We soon went 2 up when a free kick from Kieran was flicked on to Josh who ran clear and produced a great finish from the edge of the area. 2 up but along time still to play. We did have a scare when their midfielder, who was built like a man caused us trouble down the left but thankfully their striker couldn't get a clean strike on the cross. At half time we were 2 up and in control but, I warned the lads that they would feel that with the wind behind their backs they would still be in the game. However, I felt that playing up the slope we would be able to play better football. We started off the 2nd half very strongly and had a number of chances to increase the lead. Unfortuately, we didn't take them but looked in control. We did add a third when Liam R found Shaka on the right. He pulled inside the full back and hit a left foot shot into the far corner. I think the lads thought the game was over then, and Chase Stags pulled a goal back in the only time we didn't defend properly. 3-1 and still 20 minutes to play. Again we had chances but couldn't kill them off. In the last 5 minutes Chase Stags had a number of corners but we dealt with them well and Liam C in goal showing a great pair of hands. The final whistle went and you could sense how much it meant to the lads. Another cup final to look forward to and another trip to Chasetown FC for the South Staffs cup final. A great achievement for the lads. However, as I said last week we haven't won anything yet. We have got to get our focus on another tough game this Wednesday against Castle Youth in the league. Well done today lads. Keep up the hard work!!!!!! COME ON GORNAL!!!!!

07/04/10 Castle Youth H 1-0 (W)
Tonight, we welcomed Castle Youth to Ounsdale. This was our 2nd midweek game and we were looking for a better performance than when we played Kewford. Did we get it? I 'm afraid not!!! In the first half we were camped in Castles half but we were struggling to break down their defence. We didn't pass the ball well and everybody seemed to want to keep hold of the ball for to long. We did take the lead when Liam R put the ball over to Shaka who hit a fantansic shot first time from the edge of the box. Unfortuately, the goal didn't get us going and although we seemed comfortable we didn't look threatening either. 1-0 at half time. I warned the lads the game was far from over and needed to up the tempo, just being 1 up the opposition are always in the game. The 2nd half started the same though and we had alot of possession we didn't do anything with it. The longer the game went the more nervous we became and Castle came more and more into the game. In the last 15 minutes Castle had a right good go at us and created 3 really good chances. Thankfully, they weren't taken and the woodwork came to our aid. We were lucky to win today and hopefully this will give us a wake up call for the rest of the season. Well played Castle, you really gave us a good game today and will feel disappointed they didn't get anything out of the game. We have another massive game this Sunday against last years Champions Withymoor East. I just hope the lads can reproduce the form we showed when we played them in the semi final, a couple of weeks ago, we need to. Come on boys.

11/04/10 Withymoor Colts East H 1-0 (W)
At home against Withy East today and I was expecting a very tough game. That is actually what we got. We have had some big games recently and I asked the lads to dig deep and give me everything they have got in a very important game in the run in. Withy started the brighter and pushed us back. We struggled to get going but, were battling for every ball. We started to get more into the game and we put them under pressure with a few good corners from Ben. We did get caught on the break and Withy did hit the post with a good effort from outside the box. Then Shaka brought out a great save from the Withy keeper from a free kick. 0-0 at half time. At half time I stressed to the lads to keep focused and work just as hard as the first half. We started brightly and went 1 up, when Josh got brought down in the box and Shaka converted the penalty. This gave the lads something to hold on to now. The game was a real battle and both teams were giving everything. We defended very well and saw the game out to gain a valuable 3 points. It was a very tough game today with both teams giving everything on a difficult surface. Well done boys. You showed great comittment today and will need to carry it on until the end of the season.

  Bournmouth Tour
We were on our annual tour this week, down in Bournmouth. Everybody concerned had a fantastic time and you could see the lads team spirit grow over the week. A team dropped out on the the 1st morning and it just left 3 teams!!! The organisers change the schedule and we were to play each team 3 times, 25 minutes each way. So there was still plenty of playing time to keep the boys happy. As usual we lost our 1st game!!!! However, there was no stopping the boys from that point, winning every other game and winning the competition by a 7 point margin in the end. There was some fantastic football played and everybody contributed. Well done boys. The lads have now won 3 R & T tours and feel now that they need a new challenge!!! Spain is where they want to go??? Need alot of fund raising but why not. It would be a once in a life experience for the boys and they deserve it. Any ideas please let me know.

18/04/10 Trysull Tigers West H 4-0 (W)
Back off tour and back to league action. We had oringinally asked for an open date to give the lads a break, but with the number of games still left to play, we decided to cancel and get a game on instead. The lads seemed in good spirit when they arrived, however, I did remind them that we needed to get focused as we cannot afford any slip ups in the run in. We started off well and were knocking the ball around without creating any clear cut chances. We did nearly go in front when Dan just shot wide from a Ben cross. This stirred Trysull, who weren't just going to roll over and they had a couple of shots themselves which Liam dealt well with in goal. In turn with Trysull upping their tempo it made the lads go up the gears ourselves. We took the lead when Liam R put in a great corner which Trysull couldn't clear and Dan knocked home from close range. We then went 2 up when Shaka hit a first time shot from the edge of the box. We were in control now. Ryan had a great run down the right and crossed for Ben to smash home off the underside of the bar. 3-0 at half time. I asked the lads for more of the same and not let Trysull back into the game. We defended well and didn't look like they would score but we found it a little difficult to creat many clear cut opportunities ourselves. Shaka completed the scoring with a volley from 10 yards out. The lads worked hard today in warm conditions and considering that most of them had been on tour, showed great desire to get the job done. Just hope our injuries clear up though as again we were 4 short. Keep up the good work boys!!!!

22/04/10 Kewford Eagles West H 1-0 (W)
Tonight, we welcomed Kewford Eagles to Ounsdale for another mid week game. The previous mid week games we haven't performed well and I asked the lads for a more high tempo performance tonight. Unfortunately, we didn't get it. We had most of the play and Shaka & Liam R had a couple of efforts that just cleared the bar but only once in the first half did we test their keeper. Who tipped the ball around the post from a shot from Shaka. We took too much time on the ball and didn't pass the ball quick enough. At half time, I asked the lads what was wrong, but they were flat. I wanted a positive reaction but just got blank faces!! The 2nd half we actually started off worse and Kewford pushed back a little. We slowly came back into the game and we nearly took the lead when a cross from Ben was cleared off the line. We eventually took the lead when Shaka played in Josh. He hit a good shot which their keeper saved but he couldn't hold it and thankfully Liam R reacted quickest and fired the ball high into the net. I hoped this would give us a lift, but although we got into a few good positions we couldn't kill the game off. We did look fairly comfortable at the back and held on to a valuable 3 points. Overall, it was not the performance we had hoped for, however, on a positve note we kept another clean sheet. We are very much in the business part of the season and the result is more important than the performance but, we need to try to get the level of performance up to keep us challenging at the top. Hopefully, the lads will show the form they have produced for most of the season in the remainder of the games. I must say  that over the 2 games we have played against Kewford, they have put in 2 good well organised performances. Well done Kewford. Lastly, everybody at Gornal wishes Rob Perry a speedy recovery. He as been in hospital all week and our thoughts are with him and is family at this time. Get well soon mate, we all miss you and want you back playing as soon as possible. Certainly puts things into perspective!!!!!

25/04/10 Netherton Colts East A 0-15 (W)
Today, we were away at Netherton. At the start of the game, I reminded the lads of our previous game on Thursday night when we looked very much off the pace. I was looking for a reaction today and thankfully I got one. We were camped in their half and it didn't take long for Shaka to put us 1 up. The goal was our 100th league goal this season. A great achievement by the lads. The goal set the tone for the rest of the game. We haven't being scoring as many goals recently, as we had earlier in the season, but the lads seemed to be in the mood to put that right today. We looked like we were going to score every time we attacked. We added another 4 goals to give a scoreline of 5-0 and it could have been more as we tested out the woodwork on a few occassions. At half time, I stressed to the lads for them to keep up the tempo and not to let the game drift away. The lads in fairness, turned the gas on, even further to score another 10 goals to give the final scoreline of 15-0. This is the lads biggest win at 11 a side. Well done boys. Now, we have to turn our attention to another tough game on Tuesday against West Hagley. Come on boys, 4 more league games to go. Keep up the hard work!!! Well done.

27/04/10 West Hagley H 7-1 (W)
Yet another midweek game. We haven't played well on a midweek game yet and we needed to put in a good performance tonight against an improving West Hagley team. We only had 11 players available, as Shaka was at the Albion on his trail, Shane still injured, Rob just being discharged from hospital, Liam Cartwright had commitments at school and Tom was unable to get to us in time. So we were down to the bare bones. We started off quite well and we nearly took the lead early on, when Dan had a shot well saved and Josh put the rebound just over the bar. We were fairly in control but West Hagley were competing well. They slowly came more and more into the game and put us under pressure with a number of corners. They started to create a few chances and could have taken the lead on a couple of occasions, but for some good saves from Liam in goal. We weathered the storm and took the lead when Ryan broke down the left and put the ball across the box. Liam R coolly finished with a first time left foot shot. This seemed to give the lads a boost of confidence and Josh quickly put us 2 up when he caught their defender in possession and finished well. We were flying now and Ryan finished to put us 3 up within a few minutes. The game had turned in our favour, however, after a mix up in defence we gifted them a goal on the stoke of half time. At the break, I stressed to the lads, that the next 10 minutes we would have to keep things tight and not let them back into the game. We had a great start to the 2nd half when we won a penalty in the 1st minute of the half. Ben coolly tucked it home to put us 4-1 up. We started to play very well now and Josh headed in from a Ben corner to put us 5-1 up. We were in control and the lads looked relaxed, playing with some freedom. Jake added our 6th with a fine finish after a great passing movement and Ryan completing the scoring from close range. This was the best midweek performance we have done so far. The lads did great tonight especially with the players missing. Well done boys, QUALITY!!! Now we can turn our attention to a MASSIVE game on Sunday. The South Staffs Cup final at Chasetown. It will be a tough game whoever we play but I know the boys will give it their best shot. COME ON GORNAL!!!!!! It was nice to Rob tonight, who only being discharged from hospital today. Get yourself well mate and we will look forward to seeing you playing again soon.

02/05/10 Ashmore Park Rangers N 4-1 (W) South Staffs Cup Final Winners
The boys were at Chasetown for the South Staffs Cup final for the 2nd year running. To get there twice in two years was a fantanstic achievement but could we repeat last years result and win it???? The lads seemed very relaxed but determined before the game and warmed up well. We started off quickly and went ahead after 5 minutes when Ben put in a quality free kick which one of their players could only turn into their own net. Great start, but APR are no pushovers and we knew they would come back at us. They equalised when their big centre midfielder was allowed to run through unchallenged through our midfield and defence to equalise. We knew we were in a game now and there was little between the teams. Shaka nearly put us back in the lead with a shot that just went wide and then forced a good save from their keeper. However, we needed to be aware of the threat of APR on the break. 1-1 at half time. At the break, I said to the lads that we just needed to believe  in ourselves a little more and we would create more chances. 2nd half started and again little was between the teams. We nearly took the lead when Ryan broke free from their defence and looked likely to score but their defender just got back in time to get in a tackle. However, the signs were showing we were getting on top. We took the lead when again Ryan broke through after a good passing move. This time their defence couldn't get back and Ryan coolly finished to put us 2-1 up. We looked dangerous now but APR were still trying to get back into the game. They  nearly equalised when a ball was crossed in the box. Liam in goal seemed to be fouled as he came to collect the cross but the ref didn't give the foul and we scrambled the ball away off the line. We were playing good football now and looked dangerous. They put their big midfielder up front now, but we responded well when Josh broke clear from their defence to put us 3-1 up. The lads were in control now and in no mood to let the lead slip. With just over 5 minutes left Shaka was played in to complete the scoring with a cool chip over the keeper. The boys saw out of the rest of the game to see us win this fantastic competition for the 2nd year running. As I said before to get to the South Staffs final for the 2nd year running was a fantastic achievement, but to win it again was nothing short of SENSATIONAL. Lads you have been great all season and you fully deserve the win today. What can I say???? QUALITY comes to mind. I did say that picking the team today was the hardest thing I have had to do since being involved in running a team, such is the quality of the team. Well done boys, I don't know how many teams have won the South Staffs cup twice, but I don't think there are many!!!! Well done lads, now we need to turn our attention to another a tough game on Wednesday night against Celtic Athletic, which will have a big say who will win the league. Well done again boys. Another STAR to be added to your shirts I think!!!!

05/05/10 Celtic Athletic H 1-4 (L)
Back to league action tonight after the South Staffs Cup Final win. We knew if we won that the league was basically ours, however, Celtic have been very tough opponents for us and a hard game was expected. Again we were suffering injuries with Shane, Jake & Liam Cartwright out. We started off slowly and gave Celtic too much time on the ball and allowed them to knock the ball over our defence for their strikers to run onto. Celtic took the lead when our marking was poor at a corner and their player headed in. We didn't look at the races and they were winning all the physical battles. They went further ahead when we failed to deal with a long ball and theit striker run through to put them 2 up. We really need to start playing and the first time we did get the ball down and pass it around we cut through their defence and Jordan was unlucky to see a great shot hit the underside of the bar and come out. At half time I asked the lads to dig deep and give everything they have got to try to get back into the game. I did get a reaction and we soon pulled one back, when Shaka burst through and pulled one back. We had a better spell now and it looked like we might get back into the game. Celtic though were well up for the game and we couldn't get that next important goal. Dan was caught very late and had to be carried off but thankfully it looks like he will be ok. We then got caught out with the ball over the top and although the first effort hit the post it rebounded to them to go 3-1 up. Then to top off a bad night we again fell asleep at a corner and gave their player a free header to put the game beyond us. The lads came off the pitch very down. However, as I said to them, the league title is still in our own hands. We have 2 games left and 4 points should be enough for us. They won't be easy games against Withy West & Oldswinford but we still know what we need to do. Up to us boys. Now we need to pick ourselves off the floor and go again on Sunday in the league cup final against Celtic. Come on boys, you have been great all season. Lets go again. I certainly believe in you and you should believe in yourselves!!! We can't be a bad team if we won the South Staffs twice in two years. Just need to see some desire on Sunday. COME ON GORNAL, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

09/05/10 Celtic Athletic N 3-1 (W) League Cup Final Winners
Today, we were at the Dell for the league cup final against Celtic Athletic. We knew it was going to be a tough game as Celtic had only beat us 4-1 in the league game last Wednesday. Unfortuantely, Dan joined Jake, Ollie & Liam Cartwright on the injury list after he broke down in the warm up after he had took a bad knock on Wednesday. We changed our formation to 4-5-1 to combat their physical presence in midfield. The boys were up for the game and were in no mood to be out battled today. We started well and stood up to Celtic and were winning alot of ball in midfield. Chances were at a premium but we looked alot more solid than Wednesday. The confidence was growing and we started to look more dangerous. We took the lead when Liam R put over a quality corner which caused panic in the Celtic defence and the ball fell to Shane who made no mistake from close range. The lads were up for it now and Ryan nearly put us 2 up after a flowing move but their defender got back to put up a good block. 1-0 up at half time. I asked the lads for more of the same, we knew Celtic would have been fired up at half time and it was important that we continued to work our socks off and kept things tight especially for the first 10 minutes. The boys again were fantastic and never let Celtic settle. We went 2 up when Ben broke free in the area and was about to shoot when he was brought down. Shaka coolly stepped up to tuck the penalty home. The boys really dug in deep now and were competing all over the pitch. We had a couple of good opportunities but couldn't quite finish the game off. Although, we couldn't finish the game off we looked very solid at the back and Celtic didn't create any clear cut chances. Then out of nowhere Celtic pulled one back with a great strike with 5 minutes left. This was a test of character now for the lads, however they responded brillantly and Shane broke free in the area and was brought down. He dusted himself down and calmly struck the penalty home. The boys then saw out the last few minutes to secure another cup final win. What can I say!!!! The boys were fantastic again today. We won the South Staffs Cup last week, but we got turned over by Celtic in midweek when we could have secured the league title. However, they picked themselves off the floor to produce another great performance today. Well done lads,Quality again today. Another massive game on Wednesday though boys away at Withy West.Come on boys lets keep things going and finish this season on a massive high!!!

12/05/10 Withymoor West A 1-6 (W)
Tonight, we were away at a Withymoor West. They had confirmed a top four finish with their win on Sunday, so we knew this wasn't going to be an easy game. We haven't always performed on our midweek games but the lads knew we couldn't afford any slips if we wanted to continue our push for the title. Our injury jinx continued with Liam R, who felt his hamstring in the late stages on the cup final on Sunday breaking down in the warm up. So all the subs again were not fit and Shane playing on one leg!!! We started off well and were winning the ball well in midfield and were creating chances. However, JJ in goal for Withy was in excellent form and keeping them in the game. I was starting to think was it going to be one of those days when the ball wouldn't go in despite the numerous chances we had and the Withy nearly caught us out but Liam in goal made a good save. We did take the lead when Rob, who was playing as an emergency striker, scored from close range. This seemed to relax the boys now and we were playing some great football. Rob, then scored a wonder goal from distance to give us a 2-0 lead at half time. At half time, I stressed we needed to continue to play at the same tempo. Jase also mentioned what happen when we played West at home when we nearly through a 4 goal lead away. The lads started off well again and soon went 3 up when Shane scored from close range. We had numerous chances but again we were facing a keeper in top form. West pulled one back with a great strike from distance. Would we panic or respond?? Definately responded well and soon we added 2 more goals fron Shaka & Shane. Shaka, then completed the scoring with a cool finish. It was a great performance and result today. Well done boys. One more game to go and all to play for. COME ON GORNAL!!!!!

15/05/10 Oldswinford Colts H 10-3 (W)
Last game of the season and we needed a point to win the league and the boys achieving a clean sweep. Our injury jinx nearly happen again tonight when Liam in goal was really suffering with his knee. However, he gritted his teeth and decided to give it ago. Well done mate. This was our 2nd game in 3 days and we started off very slowly and Oldswinford were first to every ball. We struggled to get going and after 10 minutes we found ourselves 2 nil down. We needed a response now and quick. As the saying goes "When the going gets tough the tough get going". Thats exactly what the boys did. Shaka pulled 1 back when he broke free and lobbed the ball over their keeper. Shaka then hit the bar with a free kick. We were causing them problems now and Shaka pulled us level when he headed home after his first shot hit the bar. We looked like we were going to score everytime we went forward and Shaka added another 2 and Ben put over a quality corner which one of their defenders deflected into the net. So after being 2 down after 10 minutes we were 5-2 up at half time. A fantastic turn around. At half time I asked the lads to keep the tempo up for the last 35 minutes of the season and not let them back in. We started off great and Josh scored 2 goals in the first few minutes to put us 7-2 up. The game went a little quiet for a while. Then they got  afree kick which deflected off one of our lads and into the net.7-3 now. The lads responded really well and scored 3 more goals with Josh getting another 2 and Shaka getting his 5th. 10-3 was a great way to finish a fantastic season. The boys have been SENSATIONAL. To win the Bournmouth tournament, South Staffs Cup, League Cup and to win the League title is very special. I can safely say this is the best team I have ever had the pleasure to manage and I have had some good teams in the past. Every single member of the squad as contributed and we have had our fair share of injuries, but we have dealt with everything that as been threw at us and came out on top. Well done boys, you have made me very proud and it is a honour to manage the team. Enjoy it lads, there isn't many teams around done what you have!!! Also enjoy your rest and then we will be ready and raring to go again in September!!!!! Looking forward to it already!!!! COME ON GORNAL!!!!!
